Barry Comprehensive School pupils are the first in the Vale to have their very own skate park. Every Thursday after school, 5x60 officer Ben Williams runs the skateboarding club which he set up at the request of pupils. Ben said, “Pupils take the lead on setting up the equipment and running the session as they want”. There are strict safety rules in force with all skateboarders required to wear a helmet and pads, which are provided free of charge by the school, along with the ramps and rails. Ben is hoping to acquire a stock of skateboards to encourage beginners to attend and to reward regular attendees with a trip to a local skate park. Skateboarding is the latest in a long list of activities available at the school as part of the 5x60 initiative. 5x60 is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and run by Sport Wales. It aims to get secondary school pupils more active more often by encouraging them to exercise for at least 60 minutes, five days a week. Photos: |
